This one is with a variegated color and has a more interesting look.
Now I'm done with them for this challenge. I'll make them for gifts but I promise not to post pictures of anymore braided bookmarks.Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-40226678001922481242011-05-05T08:56:00.000-07:002011-05-05T08:56:55.438-07:00Response from Jane in South AfricaIn my last post, I mentioned that I did not know how to contact Jane from South Africa who updated the bookmark braid pattern I used. Well, she saw my post and wrote to me. Jane does not have a blog due to some unreliable internet access and I asked her if I could share her store with all of you and she gladly agreed to let me post it here.

Jane's story is heartwarming and I know you'll love reading about her life so here it is:

Hi Tatteristic, (that sounds funny, hi anyway), glad you like the bookmark pattern. I’m Jane....from Zimbabwe, but there have been a lot of political problems there, so I am currently living in South Africa. I learnt to tat just before I got married, 30 years ago. I had a teach-yourself pamphlet, but I couldn’t figure out the ‘flip’, so my aunt took me to tea with a friend of hers who tatted, and I got the hang of it. The problem with teaching myself was that it was a few years before someone lent me a book that said ‘NB, the term picot refers only to the loop of thread and not the stitch that holds it’, and I realised that I was doing an extra stitch for every picot in a pattern! Anyway, I used Burda patterns and Coats pamphlets and what not for a few years, until I started a spinning and knitting business. I spent a lot of time stirring a dye pot, and it just wasn’t compatible with tatting. I didn’t do much tatting for many years. When we were forced to leave the farm, I had to close my spinning business. I took tatting up again, and discovered the wonderful world of tatting on the internet. I’ve learnt so many new techniques in the last few years, and am now even using beads, as you can see on Jane Eborall’s blog. I would blog myself, but I live on a farm very far from the nearest town and my internet connection is very iffy. I have problems uploading photographs, and a blog is no good without photos! There is talk of putting a tower near here, so perhaps one day.... Best Wishes, Jane
I'm so glad Jane contacted me and I hope we're able to continue to stay in touch. It's always fascinating to hear someone's story about how they began tatting and who taught them.

Thank you, Jane, for sharing with all of us and let's hope they get better internet connectivity out there in your area so that you can begin your own blog too.Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-13784331003047990392011-05-02T07:43:00.000-07:002011-05-02T07:43:00.181-07:00Bookmarks Galore

I was looking through my patterns for a bookmark to give as gifts to a couple of friends and found one that originally was from an Anna Burda magazine (May 1984). The 'braid' pattern was updated to use split rings between the repeats by Jane in South Africa; the revised pattern was posted by Jane Eborall (Mar 2009).

It's a very pretty bookmark and the picots can be varied in size to change the look a little. All three of these were tatted with Size 20 thread and each one only took an evening to complete. The tatted section of the bookmark measures about 5 inches and I added a 4-inch tassel to the last split ring.

I think I'll make a couple more and keep them around. They are a fun tat and make great little thank-you gifts.

I'm not sure who "Jane in South Africa" is but I'd like to include her name or website or blog in my post so if you know who she is, please post a comment or send me an email so I can update this post.Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-22126190422429332162011-04-26T05:48:00.000-07:002011-04-26T05:48:00.781-07:0019th Motif - One More Snowflake

There is one more snowflake that I sent in for the Palmetto Tat Days quilt. It was the last one I made before the deadline date for mailing and I think it turned out really pretty.

It is The Second Day of December snowflake from Lene Bjorn's 24 Snowflakes in Tatting book. Instead of tatting it in two rounds, I chose to do a split chain to move into the second round. I have to say that for the longest time, I avoided all patterns having a split chain because I just could not get the hang of it. Well I was bound and determined not to let this technique get the better of me so I searched for all the help I could find online and practiced them over and over until I figured it out and could make them match the rest of my tatting.

I've been looking for patterns with split chains now because I'm fascinated with them and they really are a nice way to transition from one row to another. When I saw this snowflake in her book, I had to try it and I'm glad I did. It's a very easy snowflake pattern (with or without the split chain) and works up quickly - two of the things I like most - fast and easy patterns.

If you haven't mastered the dreaded split chain, don't give up yet. Just keep watching the videos that other tatters so graciously make for us and look for help online - you'll get it with a little more practice. I know you will!Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-60943484556495447672011-04-24T09:48:00.000-07:002011-04-24T09:48:25.282-07:0018th - Snowflakes for FundraiserInstead of making each snowflake an individual entry for the 25 Motif Challenge, I decided to group them together as my 18th motif.

As many of you know, the Palmetto Tatting Guild is putting together another quilt with tatting as a fundraiser for Tat Days 2011. They did this last year and it was so much fun and raised quite a bit of money so I couldn't wait to see what they were going to do this year.

I sent in 11 snowflakes total; some big and some small, all shuttle tatted, and really enjoyed making them for the quilt. Besides we didn't even have to hide the ends since they will be used to help join the snowflakes to the quilt! Such a deal!

The patterns used, in no particular order, are:

Ice Crystal Snowflake, Saundra Hameed

Layered Tatted Snowflake, Be-Stitched

MHC Snowflake, Sally Magill

Hearts in a Snowflake, Jon Yusoff

I lover her tatting and have enjoyed everything I've made from this book.

This is an all-rings pattern and I was surprised at how quickly I was able to tat it. Once you get in the rhythm of making the small rings and knowing where to join the large rings, it's a fast tat from start to finish.

Unfortunately I ran out of thread or I would have kept going and going and going. It's a fun repeat and I enjoyed making it.Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-89070063088223674282011-02-14T21:22:00.000-08:002011-02-15T19:35:58.960-08:0015th & 16th Motifs - Hearts in a Snowflake & Simple AngelHere is my 15th motif - a beautiful pattern by Jon Yusoff called Hearts in a Snowflake. I thought it was fitting for Valentine's Day. I really enjoyed doing the second round with chains and clovers done by switching your shuttles. Jon's patterns are lovely, very easy to follow, and fun to tat.

I had some thread left so I tatted Birgit's Simple Angel (Motif #16). Again, it was also a fun pattern to tat and worked up in no time at all. Next time I'll have to add beads to make her more 'glorious' and 'heavenly.'

I'm not sure who first talked about this pattern, but I liked it and have had it on my list of to-do motifs for some time. The pattern itself was found through the Wayback Machine. If you've never used the Wayback Machine and are looking for something on the internet that has moved or is no longer supported, you might be able to find it there. Type in the website address and see what happens. There are a lot of tatting patterns whose links have been broken because the hosting services stopped or data was moved.
I used Roger aka Freedman's Easy Bookmark with Butterfly Top from the Needle Tatting Proboard Forum.

It is needle tatted using Lizbeth #20 thread in the color called Confetti (#105).

Roger's instructions were perfect and it tatted up very quickly. I didn't add any beads this time but if I make it again, I think I will.
I did not complete my 25 Motif Challenge in 2010. I managed to get about halfway through it and then other stuff got in the way of my tatting.

I've decided that for 2011 I'm just going to append the annual challenge by adding the 13 motifs that I did not get done in 2010. That means I'll need to create 38 wonderful, challenging motifs by the end of this year.

I can do that, right? I'd better get started.

Wish me luck!Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-12691621713461002142010-12-01T16:27:00.000-08:002010-12-01T16:27:31.883-08:0012th Motif - Beaded WreathThis time of year requires some holiday motifs. I've done a few snowflakes but I couldn't resist this beautiful beaded wreath. The designer is Laura Bobay and the pattern can be found on Tat-Man's website.

Just so you know, the pattern calls for a second round of tatting but I liked it so much with just the first round that I stopped there. I've started making a second wreath and will do both rounds - I promise.Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-27807054313010389402010-08-30T05:15:00.000-07:002010-08-30T05:15:00.683-07:0011th Motif - Rosie the Seahorse DragonMeet Rosie, the Seahorse Dragon. This is Anne Bruvold's pattern which she taught in a recent online tatting class.

I've hesitated to do any of Anne's dragons because they looked so difficult. But, Anne, thank you so much for the seahorse dragon. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and I really enjoyed creating this piece.

As with other patterns I've done that join two pieces together, I always have to stop and think about what I'm doing. The first time, I usually join things upside down, but that's all part of the learning process.

Rosie's body is needle tatted while her wing is shuttled tatted. There's no particular reason for that; I just wanted to use both methods.Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-45271855403553105602010-08-24T06:00:00.000-07:002010-08-24T06:00:02.519-07:0010th Motif - Snowflake #2

Here is another snowflake from Lene Bjorn's 24 Snowflakes in Tatting book.

It is the Thirteenth Day of December pattern which, like my previous snowflake, has long chains.

There was another challenge with this snowflake which I have yet to conquer. It is the dreaded split chain. My heartfelt thanks to all who have created videos on this technique. I feel like I managed it pretty well for this snowflake but I definitely need to find more patterns to practice the split chain technique.

Like many other tatters who have tatted all of the snowflakes in this book, I hope to be able to do that before the end of 2010. They are beautiful and I'd really like to add them to my collection of snowflakes.Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-52320968503765747212010-08-22T06:46:00.000-07:002010-08-22T06:46:00.387-07:009th Motif - Snowflake #1I took Lene Bjorn's 24 Snowflakes in Tatting book with me on vacation because I've been anxious to try some of these patterns and because it's time to start thinking about motifs for the holidays.

It was difficult to choose which snowflake to begin with. Of course, I could have just started with the first one, but doesn't everyone do that?
Instead, I began with The Fifth Day of December snowflake and shuttled tatted it while on vacation. I also did some very small motifs like butterflies but I gave them away to anyone who inquired about what I was doing. Clicking on the photo will enlarge it but please don't look too closely :) remember, I was on vacation.

As for doing something new as part of my 25 Motif Challenge, the only thing about this snowflake that was a little challenging was making long, even-tensioned chains.

One of the reasons for choosing this particular snowflake was that each round was repetitive which meant I could put it down and pick it back up later and not lose my place.Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-38038594790676017892010-07-08T19:29:00.000-07:002010-07-08T19:29:20.377-07:00Tatteristic! is at the Halfway Point - Am I On Track?Well, it's July and I should be halfway through my 25 Motif Challenge - but I'm not.

I have been tatting but so much of it has been practice and not really suitable as a motif for this challenge. As least not as far as I'm concerned. You see, I started this challenge to learn new techniques so I'm trying to post photos and add to my list of pieces where I have actually challenged myself to learn something new.

I really do have something in the works - I've finally learned how to tat cluny leaves. Another tatter just gave me an idea for a pattern with cluny leaves so I will be working on that motif next.

As soon as it is completed, I will post pictures and continue with the challenge. I am bound and determined to complete 25 motifs by the end of the year. That was the time frame I set for myself - 12 months - January through December, 2010.

Wish me luck!Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-25958434439979288682010-06-03T12:09:00.000-07:002010-06-03T12:09:05.770-07:008th Motif - Clover Leaf DoilyYeah, I finally have something to post in my 25 Motif Challenge. It's a Clover Leaf Doily that is about 6-1/2" wide. I found the pattern by Linda S. Davies at www.craftown.com and thought it was beautiful.

It took me quite a bit of time to finish because I was working on some other things at the same time. As you can probably tell from my other posts, I enjoy tatting clovers. I haven't made any doilies before because I thought they would get boring and I would give up on them. However this pattern had interesting rounds and I really enjoyed making it.

I used Lizbeth #20 thread in a medium green and ecru. While the clover isn't new to me anymore, turning it into a pendant is. This is the first piece of tatted jewelry I've made.

I made a simple clover/chain motif and added beads to the center rings of the clovers and a charm to the bottom of one of the clovers.

What I found while making the pendant was how versatile small motifs can be. I made a couple more motifs and added them to shepherd's hooks and really like the way they turned out. I've given one of the bookmarks to a friend as a thank you gift and she thought it was lovely.
This is the Clover pattern and, as you can see, I used my new Pop-a-Bobbin shuttle to make it. This shuttle is very comfortable and holds a lot of thread which makes doing edgings a breeze.

The pattern provided a lot of good practice doing clovers and it turned out so beautiful that I am going to put it on a special crazy quilt block.

The edging is about 9.5" long and you can see there is still plenty of thread left on the shuttle. Yippee, fewer ends to hide! I think this pattern would make a beautiful choker necklace.Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-79269731855101511782010-02-21T14:30:00.000-08:002010-02-22T09:21:51.995-08:005th Motif - Green ButterflyThis butterfly will be taking flight soon to the Palmetto Tatting Guild - it is my membership butterfly for 2010.

I made this butterfly once before when I first began tatting and it was quite a challenge then. This time I used a finer thread and took my time. The butterfly is actually five sections all joined together.

I used both shuttle and needle tatting techniques to make this butterfly. I could have done the entire butterfly using either technique, but I had already wound shuttles for both colors using the continuous thread method and I did not want to make the two- and three-ring centers using the thread on the shuttles. They are such small sections that I decided to needle tat them and leave the thread CTM on the shuttles for the larger outside sections of the wings.

Now fly away, fly away little butterfly...Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-82143674702672199352010-02-07T22:34:00.000-08:002010-02-07T22:38:22.534-08:004th Motif - Curds and WheyNow that I have Mary Konior's Tatting with Visual Patterns, I want to try every pattern in her book. One of the patterns I've been wanting to work on are edgings. The pattern I selected out of Mary's book was Curds and Whey.

It requires only one shuttle and I filled a plastic Clover shuttle and was able to complete this piece with 3-4 inches of thread left over. It measures about 7' (or 19cm) When I ordered the book from Handy Hands, they included a small spool of thread to try and I loved working with it. I could not find a number on it but is a size 40 thread and from the pictures on their website it could be the Grape Pizzaz color. It's absolutely gorgeous and a dream to work with.

I also worked on a small edging and added it to a burp cloth during the Superbowl Game which you can see on Tatteristic's main blog. Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-43763909307961697592010-01-31T22:43:00.000-08:002010-02-03T09:40:12.206-08:003rd Motif - Glass MatThis is a motif that I fell in love with the first time I saw it. Just recently I purchased Mary Konior's Tatting with Visual Patterns so I could give it a try. Up to now I was afraid to try it. You see, I didn't want to try it to early in my tatting journey and get frustrated because I wasn't experienced enough or have enough understanding of visual patterns.

Fortunately for me, this pattern was very easy to follow and I thoroughly enjoyed making it. Thank you, Mary.

However, now that it's all said and done, I have to admit that I did have a little trouble joining that last and first sets together. I tried folding them but a couple of times, I think I actually tatted it backwards and had to untat it to continue.

If anyone would like to share helpful hints on joining something like this together, please feel free to leave a comment. I'm going to make another in a different color - just because it's such a beautiful motif - and I will appreciate any suggestions for finishing it up.

Note: I swapped the photo of the Glass Mat because I felt the first one was too dark. 02/03/2010Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-38688965013168172332010-01-20T21:15:00.000-08:002010-02-01T11:14:14.513-08:002nd Motif - Paprika the DragonI had a little bit of red thread left on a shuttle after doing some Christmas ornaments and decided to use it for this motif. Meet Paprika the Dragon, pattern by Martha Ess.

She's a cute little dragon and the pattern was fun to do with all of the lock stitches to create turns in the head and wings.

Now, onto the next motif. What will it be?Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-77891051891716787672010-01-06T09:45:00.000-08:002010-02-01T11:13:24.417-08:001st Motif - Tatted HeartI finally decided which motif to begin with - a heart. I love hearts so it is fitting that I begin with one.

I used the beautiful Spring Green Lizbeth Size 20 thread. The pattern which is called Tatted Heart is from Handy Hands Tatting and it was shuttled tatted. I did the center three rings one evening and finished it the next. It works up very quickly and the pattern is very easy to follow.

Hmmm, what should I do next?Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1532007390492838937.post-89429281898703947662009-12-17T12:16:00.000-08:002009-12-17T12:27:22.447-08:00Let the Tatting Challenge Begin!Well, I've just joined the 25 Motif Tatting Challenge. What I would like to do is use the 25 motifs to challenge myself to learn new tatting skills.

I began tatting with a shuttle but have since learned how to needle tat. I like both for different reasons and will use both throughout this challenge. I'll try to remember to designate which method was used for each motif.

Here are some ideas of tatting motifs I would like to make during the next 12 months:

Celtic Pattern

Edgings/Insertions

Cluny Leaf

Block Tatting

Three-Dimensional Motif

Vintage Motifs

I have already begun collecting patterns for these items and as soon as the holidays are over (or I finish all of my Christmas gifts, wrapping, and baking), I'll select a pattern and thread and begin tatting.

This is gonna be fun and I can't wait to get started!Tatteristic's 25 Motif Tatting Challengehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13063775848650325697noreply@blogger.com5
